I was at an money exchange place in a village the other day waiting for another customer standing in front of the counter while the money exchange seller was examining the quality of his 20 USD note.
Apparently, the man was a farmer bringing his 20 USD note with a little note- mark on the right side of his money.
The exchange man said to him that he would have to deduct 5 USD value because the man ‘s note got a mark on it.
It’s pretty common in Cambodia for your foreign currency’s value be deducted if there is a quality issue like a small rip or being old.
The man felt disappointed and upset because 5$ is about 30% of the total value. The exchange man asked if the man agreed to the deal of the deduction.
The farmer decided to walk away and about to leave with sadness. I saw this and knew that his note shouldn’t be deducted that much just because there was that little mark. As soon as I finished getting my service , I approached him and offered to exchange my money for his 20 USD . Excitedly, the man agreed accepted the offer, and went home smiling. I brought this note to the city and used it fine.
For your information. 5$ or 20000 riel is a whole day worth of hard-work. Do you agree that the little mark on that farmer’s note cost him a whole day of hard work ?
I was observing this and realized that the money exchange man was trying to take an advantage of the farmer because the farmer had limited knowledge about foreign currency.
